I love a good old-fashioned mercantile store. The one in Mitchell has everything! My grandson needed a few things, we found everything and them some. The prices are reasonable. I even found a candy bar I loved as a kid. It was an awesome experience!

An old West style merchantile. They sell everything from ammunition to ice cream, from car parts to cookies. Make sure you stop here and give them some business as Mitchell is a no stoplight town. They also have local produce! Ask about their shower service!

I am happy this store is in Mitchell. We had an overnight stay in the town while visiting the Painted Hills. This is a great place to stock up on provisions and ice (they have good ice cubes that don’t seem to melt as fast as those in some large grocery store chains). They are friendly too!

I am on a very restricted diet, which includes GF, and am accustomed to packing my food around wherever I go. I stopped by the store and was amazed by the selection of specialty food they offered. I am not saying they are a Whole Foods or Coop, etc, but I would never have expected any options let alone the many options that they do offer. I assume they get visitors from virtually everywhere since they are the closest town to the Painted Hills. Every other remote general store I have ever been to made no attempt to accommodate different diets. I would encourage the owners to make their food selection more visible to future visitors with more photos of their selection on their Facebook page and Google (If they did I clearly missed it). I wouldn't have bothered bringing most of the food I brought, and would have happily bought everything there instead.

This is a great general store. They have everything you need and things you want. Very friendly staff. I was camping at Walton Lake in the Ochoco National Forrest and needed camping and fishing supplies. Conveniently located near the painted hills.

As comprehensive and classic a store as you'll find anywhere. Perhaps my favorite store anywhere in the state. Was instantly impressed by the selection – from produce to rubber boots to chain by the foot. And the atmosphere is exactly what an old store should be – worn wood floors, crowded shelves. This isn't a faux "general store" for tourists; this is a place where you can actually do your shopping – a working landmark. Friendly and fairly priced. Wish every town still had a place like it. Thanks to the owners for not gutting the inside or skimping on selection for the sake of aesthetics. You're awesome. 🙏🏻

Whether you're a rancher, traveler, explorer, mechanic, family resident, or restaurateur Gabe and The Wheeler Country Trading Company have you covered. In this rural community, the store acts as a supplies oasis critical to keeping operations rolling. It harkens to a time reminiscent of the Oregon Trail where supplies, generalized knowledge, and creativity were required for survival. Gabe and his employees have these attributes in abundance.

At times, locating the item you need can be difficult due to the sheer size of the inventory and diminutive nature of the store. That's to be expected though of a place where you can purchase a spark plug, PEX fittings, locally rendered meats, fresh produce, dog food, and a cold one in a historic building built for simpler times. If ever you struggle to locate something, feel free to ask one of the friendly staff. They're happy to locate the item you seek, help find a new solution, or refer you to a nearby supply.

Make a point to stop in, pick up some snacks, and chat with the locals. You're not only supporting several families, you're supporting a community and an infrastructure for years to come.
