Chapel in the Clouds: Only remnant of a pioneer town.
Open during the summer months, with services every Sunday at 2:30
Maintained by the descendants of the original pioneers. I was privileged to preach here to a small gathering. Due to its location on top of a mesa, it feels like it's in the midst of the clouds and close enough to touch heaven.

Every time we visit Raton and Folsom we make sure to cross Johnson Mesa and stop at St. John's Church. This historical church is a one-of-a-kind in the southwest and stands today as a monument to the people who lived, worked, and played in this incredible environment. At an elevation of 7,500 - 8,000 feet above sea level, this church is often in the clouds.

The stark contrast between this single, handmade structure and the treeless mesa view seems to bring the sky even closer. It's a meditative place for prayer and appreciation. Be mindful when you visit and leave it nicer than you found it. The church is still used today and cared for by local volunteers.

I enjoy the scenic view as you drive across Johnson Mesa. One of the few places to pull off and stop is this church and cemetery. You can go in the church and read some of the interesting history of the church.

The drive up here is a little winding. I would not attempt to come here in winter. Johnson Mesa has a 0 human winter population. Make sure your vehicle is in excellent condition. Very few people drive through here. It is amazing!

This is a very unique location. A church on a Mesa dating back to the original settlers of the area. Inside you find relics of the past and the names of the families who originally settled the area. A very unique find that's off the beaten path.

St Johns Church is how we knew we were on Johnson Mesa. The roads were clear that day four years ago. All else was snow-covered. Freezing rain made bushes glisten and snow added highlights to the ice. Is was a magical place for us first-time visitors. We have visited 3 more times since.

The out-house is always a welcome and much needed sight, and the church provided a welcome break from the drive that day. Although the mesa is mostly uninhabited it is clear the church has been lovingly maintained.

Enjoy it, read historical notes, and leave a few cents for upkeep costs, or unopened bottles of water to help others enjoy their visit, too.

The size of Johnson's Mesa is amazing. We got to go to the top of Dale Mountain. Excellent view.
