The Arc of Frederick County has a once a month respite care program for Kids on Autism where parents can leave their child on their care for 4/5 hours. I contacted them as my son is a non verbal child on ASD. They very politely told me they don’t have the facility to take care of my non verbal son. What use is this kind of baby sitting programs when it doesn’t cater to parents like me who solely are the care takers of their child ? I don’t know ppl talk a lot about Arc, I don’t think so it is a nice facility for autistic kids of it can’t cater to the needs of a non verbal child !! Very disappointed

About an year ago when we were thinking about switching to ARC, a friend of mine told me to be careful and she had bad experience with them. I had forgotten about that conversation until I decided to switch to ARC of Frederick and had a bad experience with them myself.

In my experience, ARC did not care for my families needs, plans or wants. After talking to ARC for months, discussing our desires and plans for our son, the day before we were to start the service with them they reneged on all the promises leaving us with shock, frustration, sadness, being stuck and with no service. Our family tried to explain the situation and to explain how important it was but they took the stand that they made the decision and it was not changing. We really appreciate our service coordinator who told us about another service option to realize our plans. The very next day we started paper work for change of service.

ARC demonstrated insensitivity to our family's needs. They asked for patience and understanding from us while they dealt with their internal agency issues, but when it came to our problems they dismissed us without explanation or warning. Later I heard that they gave conflicting reasons to our coordinator.

Thank God for our service coordinator,  ARC's temper tandem turned out to be the blessing in disguise. Our son is now set up with the best service and support.

Our son Alex with autism attends the Parent's Day Out once a month. He is 10 years old, and he really enjoys himself there. The staff have made it a great experience for him and we feel blessed to have such a nice staff working with our son!
