I have been a volunteer for 10+ years. We have also hosted 4 times with students from the countries of Belgium, Hungary, Turkiye and Pakistan. AFS is an organization that has an outstanding reputation for the support of students and host parents. Given the impact on my family through this experience, I continue working in the mission to "create a more just and peaceful world" through intercultural exchange. For many of our students, we remain connected and share life's joys well beyond the time of their being with us.

My first experience with AFS was in 2014 when my then 14 yr old decided she wanted to be an exchange student. She went to Spain the following year, had a wonderful experience, and gained another family. On her return we hosted a student from Italy for the yr. I gained an Italian daughter, learned so much about the Italian culture, not our Americanize type. And saw much more of my part of the USA showing her different places. My daughter applied and won a State Department Scholarship and spent a gap yr in Germany. People ask me how can you let you child go over seas for a year? and others how can you let a stranger into your home? my answers, it`s only one yr. that she will be gone and the experiences are worth it. As for letting a stranger into my home, only a stranger for a bit, as one day you wonder why you didn`t do it sooner. I had such a great experience as a sending mom and host mom now I volunteer with AFS since 2016, currently a hosting coordinator, matching host families with students. It is a labor of love, I enjoy the connecting. Pay is GREAT it`s the smiles on arrival day and the tears when the students return back to their home country. Cannot put a price on that. As an Exchange Student Alumnus, (Japan 79) as well as a former host brother to 2 students (Japan & Israel). I was a shy, quiet, loner, but AFS helped plant the seed to change all that. AFS has come a long way since then too. I am amazed at how it has grown & improved since. A very well run organization with 24/7 student support, proper vetting, student health insurance while abroad, various orientations, well trained volunteers, lots of contact information, constant outreach, seminars, etc. My experience abroad changed my life in a positive manner & shaped my future in becoming the person I am today. All these years later, I am now retired & came back to AFS to volunteer, helping students take part in a grand life altering international opportunity, as well as supporting host families. My time away was exciting, broadened my world awareness, & furthered my education more than I had imagined it could. It was heartbreaking upon departing Japan that summer, leaving all the wonderful people I met, the experiences, all I lived & learned. But with my new found voice, eagerness, and lots of motivation, this once introvert returned again to study for 1 year in college. I am so happy to return to my AFS roots now that I am retired. I love being around the AFS life, the volunteers, exchange students, host families, employees, etc. It's a thrill knowing, & feeling the energy, that everyone is putting in the time & effort to learn from each other, accept/enjoy our differences, & promote peace/understanding. Sure there are the tough times, sad times (usually when saying goodbye), difficult times to make major decisions & changes, etc. but that is part of any daily life in the world. Please take some of the negative comments written with a grain of salt. People commenting on issues that they were not fully involved in, looking from the outside in, are not always aware of the factors that go into some decisions that host families, students, AFS, staff, volunteers have to make. AFS attempts to make every effort to be fair to everyone, work out issues & come up with the best possible solutions. Keep in mind that AFS host families are not paid for their efforts to take on exchange students either. Also, students go through orientations to keep various aspects of the experience in mind, including being flexible, being involved with the host family, following their culture/life style/rules, being able to compromise, leaving judgements behind, not having outrageous expectations, etc. And if any of these particular parts they agree upon can't be followed, AFS staff/volunteers make that attempt to work through those challenges with compromise as the goal, or if not reached, then an optimal solution for all involved. We had some tough situations with exchange students that lived with my family, & with 1 student, some intervention helped just to talk it all out & express the difference in ideas. With the other however, after talking it out, no compromise/changes occured, so for the sake of both host family & student, everyone involved (volunteer support, family, student) agreed a different home placement was needed (which worked out great for everyone in being content). So keep that in mind when reading other reviews that seem negative. Everything isn't always perfect for sure, life certainly isn't, mistakes can be made, misunderstandings happen. However, it's not justice in judging AFS all on one instance at one time with one student or host family here and there. Best to look at the overall picture, which includes many more examples of experiences that were positive (even with some bumps at times along the way as with anything), eye opening, exciting, & over all life changing, as was mine was (which included some negative incidences as well, but I don't judge the program, the over all experience, nor AFS in general because of any of those!). If you can, want to experience it, please do reach out to AFS. It's worth the try, as is anything in life. Become a host family, exchange student or volunteer!

I was an AFS student to Malaysia in 1980 and since then, have always been involved with AFS in some manner, whether as a volunteer, a host parent, or a staff member. The organization gave me the most beneficial year of my life, an experience that continues to influence my worldview and my empathy for others, even after nearly 45 years since I was an AFS student. I owe much of my life's trajectory to AFS and it has and always will hold a very special place in my heart. I cannot recommend a better organization for anyone seeking to help make the world a better place for people from all walks of life.

A year ago I studied abroad in Denmark through AFS. There was a wide network of volunteers available, and by studying with them I was able to meet exchange students from all over the world. All the volunteers were really passionate and caring, and the program was not only supportive in building connections, but also in practical things, like help with obtaining a visa, bank account, and language learning. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to volunteer/study abroad.

Our daughter had wanted to study abroad since grammer school. We checked out multiple organizations and AFS offered the best program for us. Our daughter spent the 2009-2010 school year in Thailand. Her experience was amazing. The pre-departure orientations, the program, the volunteers and her host family were all wonderful. We were never worried and knew there was always support staff at the ready. Our daughter blossomed into a well rounded adult and is passionate about sharing her experience in hopes that other students can enrich their lives with a cultural exchange. She went on to earn a Fulbright Scholarship and taught English in Indonesia for two years. She has been back to Thailand multiple times to visit her host family, and has maintained relationships with other global students she met through AFS. She continues to volunteer with AFS. If you are considering hosting or a student exchange, please give AFS a try.

My family has hosted students from Denmark, Dominican Republic and Japan. They were all wonderful experiences, and we have maintained contact with two of them for over 20 years. The support we received from AFS, and the great experiences we had convinced me to be a volunteer for them and as of today, I've been a volunteer for 34 years. It is a great organization.

I've been an AFS volunteer since 2008. I studied abroad in Thailand in 2010-2011 and have been back 4 times and counting to visit my host family. Photo is of my liaison and me in 2015 during my second visit. AFS changed my life for the better. I cannot recommend this organization highly enough! Hope to pay forward by hosting someday.
