I like the concept of the mala place, fried the potatoes and lotus root like chips to go with the mala soup! Ordered for sharing at $30 but was soooo filling and green milk tea goes well with the soup.. will go back and try the big spicy next round. Crowd was okay and waiting time is decent ( approx 15 mins) during lunch time

Clean and comfortable atmosphere! Came for early dinner at around 5pm so there was only a few people around. Crowd started to stream on at around 6pm.

Food was generally yummy. But I thought the soup could be hotter. The pork belly also has quite a strong ‘porky taste’. The highlight is the fried items, they were nicely fried - awesome!

Service crew were very polite and friendly! I requested for a change of bowl of rice as it was quite mushy - think due to much water added while cooking rice. Service crew told me there was only one rice batch and offered to change to another portion of noodles for me. It was very nice of them to prioritise customer service as well!

This is by far my favourite mala spicy soup/pot! Hope they can provide better quality meat!

the best part about hot hideout is the fried potatoes and lotus root, and the scrambled eggs they add, these two are good enough to get my 5 stars. The ingredients are okay, not mind blowing. the broths are amazing had the mala tang and tomato soup. highly recommend these. the two photos are on two separate occasions. I think students should get a discount though. please

The newly opened Hot Hideout branch at NUS’s PGP presents an interesting concept with all ingredients—whether fish or potato—charged by weight at the same price. This setup might tempt diners to lean towards picking more protein-heavy items, which adds a strategic twist to your meal.

The soup version, however, was a bit unusual. It leaned more sweet and milky than spicy, resembling a warm bowl of cereal-infused milk—a taste profile that’s unconventional for Sichuan-style food.
The dry version was impressive with a mountain of glorious fried lotus chips, all while delivering a heat that builds over time, was only so-so in taste. Unfortunately, the seasoning during this visit felt underdone, offering spice but lacking the robust, bold flavor that one typically associates with Sichuan dishes.

The self-serve condiments was a nice touch, with fresh options like coriander and peanuts. The peanut sauce, thick and sticky like peanut butter, added an interesting dimension but may not appeal to everyone. The fried items like lotus root chips were indulgent and fun for snacking, but the overall flavor of the meal fell short of the hype.

While Hot Hideout offers a decent meal and a seamless ordering experience, the execution and actual food didn’t quite match expectations on this visit. It’s worth trying for the novelty, but it may not become a go-to for Sichuan food enthusiasts.

Been meaning to try hot hideout for a while now as I had heard many great things about it. I must say our first experience did not disappoint us.

We fortunately came early before the lunch crowd came. We picked our ingredients including the ones that will be deep fried (lotus roots, potato and luncheon meat). We then head to the payment counter. All was automated. We chose the soup type (collagen mala), the level of spiciness (we picked medium spicy with additional numbing) and the fact we wanted the deep fried ingredients to be separated. This was also where you choose for the add on scrambled eggs (a MUST).

I must say this was the most expensive mala I’ve ever had. It cost us over SGD 40. But we happily paid as we can’t wait to taste the meal. We waited patiently for our buzzer to ring whilst chomping on peanuts that we took separately. The peanuts, coriander, sesame sauce and spring onions were all self service.

When the food came…it was served in 2 massive bowls. One soup and one fried ingredients. My my my…it was delicious indeed. The scrambled eggs truly added to the creaminess of the dish. And the fried ingredients were addictive and added alot of texture.

Worth a visit. Worth coming back here. Maybe not so often as it is quite costly. But it those serve up a good bowl of mala. Be prepared for a long queue. Highly recommended.

Was recommended by my friend and I think I made a right choice coming here! The mala is nice and my friend enjoyed her tomato soup as well. However, I feel that the lotus and potato could be chopped into smaller pieces as my friend said she couldn’t finish it last time. Overall, I like everything here and I’ll come back again!
